Echo Park
Urban Makeover
After a significant renovation to this 1880s Victorian home, with only $25k left of the budget, we had to create a beautiful urban garden, install irrigation, create a privacy solution and beautify an unattractive chain fence, all with limited hardscape—challenge accepted!
With the clients greatly concerned about privacy, the first order of business was bringing in a lot of reliable evergreen shrubs and trees to create year-round screening from the neighbors in the extremely urban area. Since the home is located in the warm, arid climate of Southern California, it was vital that the plant palette be durable in the conditions. We also included rambling roses, vines and fruit trees, a charming nod to the Victorian design in the front yard, balancing this with the contemporary look of Agaves, foliage plants and Anigozanthos to fit right into the modern urban environment of the back of the home. Installing irrigation further improved the landscape, helping to get the existing fruit trees and new Fig tree to fruit more, as well as effortlessly maintain useful herbs like Lavender and Rosemary. Perfect for entertaining friends, family and clients the new space definitely lives up to the renovated status!
