Orinda
Native Hill
Following county guidelines to create a fire defensible space, the modern garden on this 1-acre property is a seamless extension of the gorgeous existing natural landscape.
Situated on a hill in inland Orinda, the property is not only prone to extreme fire pressure but is also subject to multiple hits of frost in the Winter. Focusing on a more foliage and texture-based plant palette, we largely used native California plants and Mediterranean climate plants that are waterwise and resistant to frost and fire, allowing the modern architecture of the home to stand out. To add interest and seasonal variety, we also included unusual plants from South Africa that bloom in Winter and early Spring. Native Iris douglasiana, showy Grevillea flowers and Kangaroo Paw flowers bring moments of delight during the year. We also ensured all plants were deer resistant to keep them from destroying the garden. Boulders bridge the garden with the landscape and the architecture of the home, allowing the modern design of the home to align with the surrounding natural environment.
